guianica (Steyskal), 1951: 295 View in CoL
( Sepedon ), fig. 18 (♂ terminalia, surstylus) [ Steyskal 1973: 145]
( vau Abercrombie, 1970 ; unavailable name)
( vau Mello & Bredt, 1978a , in part; nomen nudum)
Note 1: The name Sepedonea vau Steyskal (manuscript name) first appeared in Abercrombie’s unpublished Ph.D. thesis ( Abercrombie 1970: 126), in which he presented the complete life cycle and description of all immature stages. Abercrombie acknowledged that, "G.C. Steyskal [provided] identification ... and kindly agreed to the use of ... manuscript names for undescribed species." The name Sepedonea vau (lacking an author’s name or description) was first published in Mello & Bredt 1978a: 212. They reported phenological data for flies collected in central Brazil. Subsequently, Mello & Bredt 1978b: 1459 published more phenological data for S. vau , again without an author’s name or description. By comparison with specimens previously identified by Steyskal, LK provided determinations of at least some representative specimens collected by Mello & Bredt at 59 different sites in Brazil. Freidberg et al. 1991: 16 placed S. vau as a nomen nudum under S. guianica (Steyskal), 1951 , citing Mello & Bredt 1978b: 1459 but overlooking Mello & Bredt 1978a.
HT: ♂ “ Guyane ” [ French Guiana], Maroni, Comoro Is. [= Maroni River, Comoro Island, in the borough of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni]. NHMUK, unnumbered. Originally described from only the holotype, which Freidberg et al. 1991 examined and redescribed. Steyskal (1951) presented a sketch of the "male hypopygium, spread," which agrees in lateral view with fig. 43[a] of Freidberg et al. 1991: 17.
DIST: BRAZIL (Distrito Federal; Espírito Santo; Goiás; Minas Gerais; Paraíba; Paraná; S ã o Paulo). COLOMBIA (Valle del Cauca). FRENCH GUIANA (Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni). SURINAME (Paramaribo). VENEZUELA (Cojedes). Map: Ciprandi Pires & Marinoni 2010
Note 2: We think that the distribution of S. guianica in Brazil, as reported in the literature ( Mello & Bredt 1978 a, Freidberg et al. 1991, Marinoni & Mathis 2006, Ciprandi Pires et al. 2008), may not be fully accurate. Mello & Bredt 1978a recorded S. guianica from northeastern Brazil (Paraíba) and central Brazil (Goiás, Distrito Federal, and Minas Gerais), but Marinoni & Mathis 2006 questioned these determinations. Freidberg et al. 1991 reported S. guianica from central Brazil (Goiás, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo), southeastern Brazil (S ã o Paulo), and southern Brazil (Paraná). Marinoni & Mathis 2006 presented data indicating that the closely related S. giovana is found in some of the same localities in Minas Gerais, S ã o Paulo, and Paraná. Marinoni & Mathis 2006 also stated that S. guianica is found in northwestern Brazil but did not provide any specific localities. Ciprandi Pires et al. 2008 concluded that S. guianica is completely absent from Brazil but did not present any corroborating data. We are unable to provide a fully accurate distribution list of the species in Brazil based on the available information. See additional notes under S. giovana .
FIGS: Freidberg et al. 1991 (mid femur, ♂ sternites, distiphallus, posterior surstyli, ♀ synsternum), Marinoni & Mathis 2006 (surstylus; spermatheca), this paper (anterodorsal head, hind tibia)
Note 3: Freidberg et al. 1991: 17 figured two intraspecific variations of the posterior surstyli—figs. 42[b] and 43[b]—agreeing with Marinoni & Mathis 2006: 42 figs. 9 and 10 (but not fig. 14—as " S. guatemalana "—on p. 45) of S. giovana , and figs. 42[a] and 43[a] agreeing with Steyskal 1951: 292 fig. 18 of S. guianica . See additional notes under S. giovana .
