Type genus Tropidomyia Williston, 1888: 11 . Included genera: Physoconops Szilady, 1926: 588 , Schedophysoconops Gibson gen. nov., Tropidomyia . Uncontroverted morphological autapomorphies: none. Members of Tropidomyiini are characterized by the presence of lateral ocelli (3); this character state is present in many other conopid taxa, but it represents an autapomophic character reversal in Tropidomyiini .
Gibson et al. (2012) also recover a monophyletic Tropidomyiini View in CoL using molecular and morphological analysis and including only representatives of Physoconops View in CoL . Zimina (1960) describes the tribe Tropidomyiini View in CoL , with the following characteristics: facial fovea absent; basisternum with anterolateral extensions; arista two-segmented; vein R 1 not ending near end of R 2+3. Hennig (1966) suggests that the absence of facial fovea is a secondary loss in Tropidomyia View in CoL . In the present analysis, reduction of the facial fovea and facial ridge (20, 24) along with a strongly developed facial carina (23) are apomorphies of Tropidomyia View in CoL , not Tropidomyiini View in CoL ( s.l.). The condition of the basisternum, arista, and wing veins in Tropidomyiini View in CoL is plesiomorphic to the Conopinae View in CoL .
While usually placed within its own tribe, Tropidomyia View in CoL has been placed in Physocephalini View in CoL by some authors. Members of Tropidomyiini View in CoL can be distinguished from Physocephalini View in CoL by the presence of lateral ocelli, an ocellar tubercle, a prominent row of setae on the mesofemur, and setae or bristles on the ventral half of the proepisternum.
