Russulaceae View in CoL View at ENA
We found four species of Russula forming ECM with Garry oak in BC, three of which cluster with collections named Russula cerolens Shaffer, 1972 , Russula pectinatoides Peck, 1907 , and Russula brevipes Peck, 1890 ; none of the UNITE SH of our collections are assigned species names, which underlines the need for clarification of species in this highly speciose genus ( Li et al. 2019). Russula collections identified to these species in south coastal BC are commonly made where Garry oak is found. In BC, the specimens of R. cf. brevipes associated with Q. garryana form a group distinct from conifer-associated sequences of R. cf. brevipes (Anna Bazzicalupo, pers. comm.); further work on this species group will be needed to assign correct names. Russula pectinatoides is an eastern North American species; in BC, R. cf. pectinatoides has been collected with European oaks on the UBC campus and with spruce and hornbeam in BC cities.
