Type species Felis yagouaroundi E. Geoffroy, 1803 by monotypy (subgenus elevated to genus by Pocock, 1917:346).
CONTEXT AND CONTENT. Order Carnivora , Suborder Feliformia , Superfamily Feloidea , Family Felidae , Subfamily Felinae . The genus Herpailurus contains one species. There is no agreement on whether Herpailurus is a true genus or a subgenus of Felis ( Cabrera, 1957; Ewer, 1973; Hall, 1981; Hemmer, 1978; Leyhausen, 1979; Salles, 1992; Wozencraft, 1993). Kitchener (1991) and Nowak (1992) provide a systematic table and Salles (1992) a series of cladograms of the different opinions regarding the taxonomy of the Felidae .
