Cyperus stoloniferus Retzius (1786:10)

Lectotype (designated by Fischer 1932):— INDIA.: Tranquebar [currently Tharangambadi, Tamil Nadu], s.d., Koenig , s.n., ( LD, LD1299527 , digital image!); isolectotypes: [ LD, LD1293047 ; C, C10010336 , C10010337 digital images!].

C. stoloniferus was first proposed by Retzius based on the collections of Koenig from Tranquebar. We could trace out two specimens of C. stoloniferus Retz. from Koenig’s collections at Lund Herbarium (LD1293047 and LD1299527) and two at Copenhagen Herbarium (C10100336 and C10100337). The sheets housed at Lund Herbarium might be the ones directly referred to by Retzius to describe C. stoloniferus Retz. , and on the reverse side of the sheet LD1293047, it is written that ‘ Cyperus rotundus Kon’ means Koenig fetched the specimen and the sheet is of C. rotundus L. But , the critical examination of the specimen revealed that the specimen is that of C. stoloniferus . The sheet LD1299527 possesses the inscription ‘ Cyperus stoloniferus N. Konig’. Further, Fischer wrote “Type” over the sheet, and in his publication (1932), he mentioned the inscription, and this constitutes an effective and valid lectotypification. The sheet LD1293047 and other original materials found in C, C10100336, and C10100337 constitute isolectotypes.
