1.1. Myrcia antonia (O.Berg) Mazine , comb. nov.
Basionym: Rubachia antonia O. Berg (1857: 29) .
Marlierea antonia (O.Berg) D. Legrand (1962a: 29) .
Type:— BRAZIL, “Habitat in prov. S. Pauli ”, illustration in Berg (1857: tab. 13) (lectotype designated here) . Remaining syntype:— BRAZIL, São Paulo, Sellow s.n. ( B, probably destroyed) . Epitype (designated here):— BRAZIL, São Paulo, Bananal, Parque Nacional da Bocaina , 1100m, margens rio Bonito , 28 February 1983, G. Martinelli 9840 ( RB, K) .
Marlierea villas-boasii Mattos (2003: 1) , syn. nov. Type:— BRAZIL. São Paulo, Santo André , March 1964, J. Mattos 11465 (holotype FLOR!, isotype SP!).
Distribution:— Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
Note:—The inflorescences of this species are generally ferruginous. When Mattos (2003) described Marlierea villas-boasii , he did not discuss characters that distinguished the species or provide a key to separate it from close relatives. Based on the protologues alone, Marlierea villas-boasii differs from M.antonia by the apices of the leaves (rounded or slightly retuse in M. villas-boasii and acute in M. antonia ). Examination of all material available, including that collected after Mattos’s work, demonstrates that this character varies continuously and no distinctive characters have been found to maintain Marlierea villas-boasii as a separate species.
