Subfamily Endemoceratinae Schindewolf, 1966
Te Endemoceratinae paragraph originally included here was previously published in Appendix A, Supplementary data, Multimedia component 11, in Bryers et al. (2024), to which we refer the reader.
As understood here (A.P. opinion), the subfamily Endemoceratinae is strictly restricted to the boreal genera Endemoceras and “ Distoloceras ” excluding the genotypic specimens illustrated by Neumayr and Uhlig (1881). Te holotype of Distoloceras hystrix , described and refigured by Howarth (1962), shows only simple trituberculate ribs in the internal whorls, a feature common to many boreal species. Te specimen of Neumayr and Uhlig (1881) shows many differences among which the mere presence of bifurcated ribs on the umbilical border and a complete absence of lateral tubercles before 35 mm in diameter, and in fact, does not belong to Phillips’s species (see Phillips, 1829). We also note that the type species of the genus Distoloceras (Hyatt, 1900, p. 588) are those figured by Neumayr and Uhlig (1881). De facto, the genus Distoloceras as currently understood is polyphyletic and in need of a revision.
Te opinion of L. G. Bulot and also C. Frau (see Appendix A, Supplementary data, Multimedia component 11, in Bryers et al., 2024), that this subfamily also includes the submediterranean genera Lyticoceras , Haroella and doubtfully Teodorites Baraboshkin & Mikhailova, 2006 , is therefore not followed here, as there are currently no good arguments for a relationship with the boreal fauna. An Haroella-Teodorites lineage is proposed and placed in the subfamily Neocomitinae and an Lytoceras - Cruasiceras lineage in the subfamily Leopoldiinae Tieuloy, 1971 . Te question arises whether the Haroella - Teodorites lineage and Lyticoceras - Cruasiceras lineage would merit the introduction of their own subfamilies.
