7. Artemisia schischkinii Krascheninnikov (1949: 2) View in CoL . Type:— RUSSIA. Altay: Chui steppe, 2 September 1937, A. Kalinina s.n. [lectotype designated here: LE01081788 !; isolectotype: LE01081786 ! (excluding the plant in the upper right part of the sheet)].
Perennial herbs, 5–10 cm tall. Stems few, slightly curved at the base, branching from the upper part, branches 0.5–2 cm long, closely appressed to the stem. Lower stem leaves ovate, 2-pinnatisect, 0.5–1.5 cm long, 0.5–1 cm wide, petiole 0.5–1.5 cm long, with 2–4 segments per side, segments further pinnatisect, lobules linear-lanceolate, 3–5 mm long, 0.5–1 mm wide, apex acuminate. Middle stem leaves pinnatisect, 0.5–1 cm long, 0.5–0.8 cm wide, with linear pseudostipules. Upper stem leaves undivided, with linear lobules. The grayish-white pubescence on the stems, branches, and leaves almost completely sheds at maturity, and the leaves have a rigid texture. Capitula ovoid, 2–3 mm long, 1.5–2 mm in diameter. Synflorescence a narrow panicle. Bisexual florets 3–6, with red corollas.
Notes:—In the protologue of Artemisia schischkinii, Krascheninnikov (1949a) designated the gathering A. Kalinina s.n. as the type, without specifying herbarium. We have traced two sheets of this gathering at LE. Both sheets have the information given in the protologue and match perfectly the original description. According to Arts. 9.12 and 9.17 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018), sheet LE 01081788 has been designated as the lectotype, and the other sheet (excluding the plant in the upper right part of the sheet) as the isolectotype.
Filatova (2007) first recorded that the distribution of A. schischkinii in Xinjiang, China, and cited the gathering at LE: A.A. Yunatov et al. 288. We have traced one sheet (LE01297191) of this gathering, and identified it as A. gracilescens rather than A. schischkinii . Although this species is similar to A. gracilescens in habit and leaf size but can be distinguished by its stems 5–10 cm (vs. 15–30 cm) tall, upper branches 0.5–2 cm (vs. 3–10 cm) long, and leaves sparsely tomentose (vs. densely tomentose). Consequently, we have excluded A. schischkinii from the flora of China in this study.
