Onchis Férussac, 1821 : xxxi.

― Type species, by monotypy, Onchidium peronii Cuvier, 1804 . Férussac (1821: xxxi, 8) refers to Cuvier’s Onchidium peronii as Onchis , to distinguish it from Buchannan’s Onchidium typhae . Onchis should have priority over Peronia , which was created a year later by Fleming (1822), with the same type species, by monotypy. However, Peronia has been more widely used than Onchis . Onchis Férussac was emendated as Oncis by Herrmannsen (1847: 149) for unjustified reasons, and Plate (1893) created a new name Oncis not Herrmannsen, which certainly did not simplify the situation. Oncis Plate, 1893 was replaced by Platevindex Baker, 1938 (type species coriaceum Semper, 1885 ). However, one may consider Onchis Férussac, 1821 as a potentially valid clade name when phylogenetic relationships are better known within Onchidiidae . At this stage, given that the systematics of Onchidiidae is already quite confusing, there is no need to disrupt it even more by replacing Peronia (adopted by Labbé and others) by Onchis (a name that has remained almost completely forgotten).
