savignyi Recluz, 1869: 61 [ Peronia ],

no locality mentioned [but very likely the Red Sea].

― Type material: specimens illustrated by Savigny (“Descr. de l’Egypte, pl. II, f. 1—5”); see below for discussion.

― Valid ( Semper 1885, as Onchidium savignyi ), synonym of Onchidium verruculatum ( Hoffmann 1928) . Recluz (1869: 61) did not accompany the name Peronia savignii with a description. However, he refers to an illustration (“Descr. de l’Egypte, pl. II, f. 1—5”). Unfortunately, those figures refer to three species, only one of which being an onchidiid: a Tritonia (figs 1.1–1.12), a Bursatella (figs 2.1–2.13), an onchidiid (figs 3.1–3.8); there are no figures 4 and 5 on Savigny’s plate II. Maybe Recluz meant “f. 3.1—8,” because there is no easy explanation for the exclusion of figures 3.6–3.8. In any case, Peronia savignii is available and the type series consists of all the specimens illustrated by Savigny (ICZN Art. 72.4). Obviously, because this type series would include non-onchidiid gastropods, one of the figures 3.1–3.8 will have to be selected as a lectotype to simplify the application of Peronia savignii . This selection should be coordinated with the selection of a lectotype for Onchidium verruculatum Cuvier, 1830 , so that savignii can remain a synonym of verruculatum (both names are based on the same figures by Savigny). The specific name savignii was emendated to savignyi by Semper (1885: 260—261, pl. 19, fig. 6, pl. 20, fig. 1, pl. 22, figs 5–9). The Berlin Museum holds a specimen (ZMB 39018) of Onchidium savignyi from Bohol, Philippines, labeled as a type: this specimen was certainly used by Semper for the emendation, but it cannot be the type, which is the material used for the original description of Peronia savignii .
