sloanii Cuvier, 1817: 411 [ Onchidium ],
[Caribbean locality, based on reference to a plate “pl. 273, 1 et 2” published in Sloane’s (1707 -1725) Natural History of Jamaica].
― Type material: specimens illustrated on the figures published by Sloane (see below, for discussion).
― Regarded as a veronicellid by Semper (1885), then not mentioned by Plate (1893), Hoffmann (1928) and Labbé (1934a); currently regarded as a valid name of a veronicellid species ( Thomé, 1988). Cuvier (1817: 411; 1830: 46) did not describe Onchidium sloanii ; he simply referred to two figures from Sloane’s (1707 —1725) Voyage to the Islands Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S. Christophers and Jamaica …: The problem is that Cuvier’s reference to the figures (“pl. 273, 1 et 2”) corresponds to two illustrations of lizards. Obviously, this was a mistake and Cuvier likely meant to refer to another animal. Férussac (1819) and Guilding (1825) assumed that Cuvier meant “pl. 233, figs 2–3” on which a “ Limax nudus cinereus terrestris ” (Sloane 1725: 190—191), which is not an onchidid, is illustrated. Férussac (1819) thought that Onchidium sloanii was intermediary between an onchidiid and a veronicellid; Blainville (1825a: 523) regarded it as “une véritable [a true] onchidie ou [or] véronicelle” because Blainville then used the genus name Peronia for onchidiids instead of Onchidium , which he used for veronicellids; Guilding (1825) still considered sloanii to be a member of Onchidium but he followed Blainville and also used Onchidium for veronicellids (see, Onchidium occidentale ); Semper (1885) thought that O. sloanii was a veronicellid; Plate (1893), Hoffmann (1928), and Labbé (1934a) simply did not mention it. In summary, Onchidium sloanii is an available name under the ICZN, but it does not refer to an onchidiid, whether one considers Cuvier’s original reference (pl. 273, figs 1–2) or Férussac’s corrected reference (pl. 233, figs 2–3). souriei Gabe and Prenant, 1955: 84—91 , figs 1–7 [ Oncidiella ],
