Perennes, con rizomas de entrenudos ± largos. Una o 2 glumas estériles en la base de la espiguilla. Aquenios biconvexos, amarillos, pajizos u oliváceos. Estilopodio generalmente de textura esponjosa, de ordinario estrangulado en la base. Estilo con 2 estigmas.
