Zodarion algiricum (Lucas) View in CoL
( Figures 1 View Figure 1 (B), 2 (B), 3 (B,H) 4 (A), 5 (A), 6(A–C)
Enyo algirica Lucas 1846: 230 , pl. 14, fig. 6 (♂ ♀).
Zodarion algiricum View in CoL : Bosmans et al. 2019: 11, fig 4j–l (♂ ♀).
Type material examined
Lectotype ♂, ALGERIA : Algiers, without further data. Paralectotypes: 2♀, 5 juveniles ( MNHN-AR9944 ), collected together with the lectotype .
Diagnosis
The male of Z. algiricum can be distinguished from its congeners by the ventral tooth of the embolus, which has an obtusely angled L-shape ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 (B)), and the elongated tibial apophysis, terminating in an anterior tooth that projects dorsally and is approximately twice the length of the posterior tooth ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 (C)). The female of Z. algiricum resembles those of Z. dispar Denis and Z. kabylianum Denis , characterised by an epigyne with a central semicircular cavity, partially covered posteriorly by a pair of epigynal wings ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (B,D,E), respectively). However, their copulatory organs differ in that the epigynal wings are rounded triangular in Z. algiricum ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (B)) and Z. dispar ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (D)), whereas Z. kabylianum has epigynal wings that extend laterally ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (E)). Additionally, females of Z. algiricum and Z. kabylianum have vulvae with structures at varying levels (vs structures at a similar level in Z. dispar ; compare Figure 3 View Figure 3 (H,K,J)).
Description
Male (lectotype). Total length 3.56, carapace 1.79 long, 1.46 wide. Habitus ( Figures 4 View Figure 4 (A), 5(A)): Prosoma. Carapace, clypeus, chelicerae and sternum dark; mouthparts light brown, with dark median part. Eyes. AME 0.13, ALE 0.09, PME 0.07, PLE 0.06. Abdomen dorsum dark, with longitudinal light mark posteriorly, venter light. Spinnerets light yellow to white. Leg segments yellow, except femora I–II entirely dark, femora III and IV dark distally. Leg lengths: I 6.07 (1.9, 0.47, 1.04, 2.02, 0.64), II 5.77 (2.1, 0.5, 1.13, 2.2, 0.7), III 5.88 (1.9, 0.5, 1, 1.88, 0.6), IV 7.82 (2.29, 0.55, 1.67, 2.61, 0.7). Palp ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 (A–C)): Tibial apophysis (RTA) elongated with a small bulge (B) at base, recurved dorsally and split terminally into two blunt teeth: anterior tooth (At) distinctly longer, directed dorsally; posterior tooth (Pt) approximately half-length of anterior tooth, directed downward. Median apophysis (MA) somewhat U-shaped, blunt distally. Embolus with two teeth equal in length: dorsal tooth (Ed) with rounded tip, and ventral tooth (Ev) obtusely angled L-shaped, with distinctly blunt tip.
Description
Female (paralectotype). Total length 4.66, carapace 1.9 long, 1.26 wide. Habitus ( Figures 1 View Figure 1 (B), 2(B)): Prosoma, abdomen, eyes, and legs: same as those in males. Leg lengths: I 5.62 (1.72, 0.42, 1.01, 1.95, 0.52), II 5.87 (1.67, 0.41, 0.98, 2.21, 0.6), III 5.21 (1.58, 0.4, 0.89, 1.78, 0.56), IV 7.41 (2.09, 0.53, 1.64, 2.52, 0.63). Copulatory organ ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (B,H)): Epigyne with a central semicircular cavity, sclerotised along outer margins. Posteriorly, cavity covered by a pair of distinct, rounded triangular epigynal wings (W). Vulva approximately twice as wide as long, with structures at varying heights; spermathecae small, separated by>3 times their diameters, with bladder-like structures on posteromesal side.
