Lucas, H. (1852) Ixodes variegatus, Lucas. Bulletin de la Société Entomologique de France, Série 2, 7, 88–89.
Type depositories: BMNH and MNHN: syntypes (males) ( Neumann 1899, Keirans & Hillyard)
Type locality: Havana, Cuba
Type host: Cyclura harlani
Current status: a synonym of Amblyomma albopictum and its original name (preoccupied). The current name and status of Ixodes variegatus was established by Neumann (1899).
Comments: Neumann (1899) listed a male collected from Cercolabes villosus in Brazil in his description of Amblyomma albopictum , but this tick was not considered present in that country by Guglielmone et al. (2021), and Lucas (1852) did not mention any specimens collected outside Cuba in his description of Ixodes variegatus . Keirans & Hillyard (2001) named the type host for Amblyomma albopictum as Cyclura nubila , while ignoring the original preoccupied name of this tick species ( Ixodes variegatus ).
