Hoogstraal, H., El Kammah, K.W. & Camicas, J.L. (1992) Notes on African Haemaphysalis ticks : XVI. H. (Rhipistoma) subterra sp. n., a new member of the leachi group (Ixodoidea: Ixodidae ). International Journal of Acarology, 18, 213–220.
Type depositories: USNTC: holotype (male) and paratypes? (males and females); ORSTOM: paratypes? (males and females) ( Hoogstraal et al. 1992)
Type locality: Ngong , 40 km southwest of Nairobi, Kajiado County, Kenya
Type host: Herpestes sanguineus
Comments: Tomlinson et al. (2018) found only one paratype (named as allotype) in the USNTC. Tomlinson et al. (2018) stated that there are at least three species among the specimens used to describe Haemaphysalis subterra by Hoogstraal et al. (1992), and only the holotype specimen is bona fide Haemaphysalis subterra .
