Notes
This species is commonly referred to as the Little Black Forestfly ( Stark et al. 2012). The distribution of A. nigritta extends from mainland Labrador and the Canadian Maritime Provinces west to Michigan and southward to Alabama and Mississippi, with western extensions to Missouri and Arkansas ( DeWalt et al. 2024). Harper (1973 a) reported a univoltine life cycle for A. nigritta in an intermittent stream in southern Ontario, with emergence dates ranging from mid-May to early July. In New York, adults have been collected from mid-April to early August (Fig. 18 View Figure 18 ). This species was collected commonly from coastal streams on Long Island and smaller streams and rivers throughout the state (Fig. 17 c View Figure 17 c ), occupying a wide range of elevations from 2-663 m asl (Fig. 19 View Figure 19 ). Larvae were often found in submerged leaf packs and other in-stream organic material.
