Byrsinus multitrichus sp. nov.
( Figs 2, 9, t4)
Diagnosis. This new species belongs to the group of species characterized by margins of head bearing only hair-like setae, and lackingpeg-like setae. ln general habitus B. multitrichus sp. nov. is similar to B. ochraceus (Dist.) , but can be recognized from the latter by its more dense pilosity of the body smface ( B. ochraceus - long hair-like setae present only on body margins and abdominal sterna, B. mnttitrichus - long hair-like setae occw· also on pronotum, scuteUum and corium - Fig. 2), and by the presence of numerous very loog hair-like setae on the ventral and dorsal submargins of pai-aclypei (B. och.racew, - numerous very long hair-like setae occur on the dorsal submargins of paraclypei, whereas only a few setae occur on their ventral submargins), l\foreover, both these species differ also in the shape of male paramere (Figs!), 10) and the opening of pygopho1·c (Pigs 14, 15).
Descriptwn. Body moderately robust, broad ( Fig. 2), about 1.4-1.5 limes longer than wide (body length: 3.73-4.02, body width: 2.51-2.85). Dorsal surface brown oT castancous, except head whicb is dark castaneous in females.
Head dorsally alutaceous, impunctate except for setigcrous punctures; clypeus almost as long as or only slightly shorleC' than paraclypei, with a pair of subapical setigerous punctmes bearing long hair-like setae; dorsal side of each paraclypeus witl1 a submarginal row of 8-9 setigerous punctures bearing long hair-like seta.e, peg-like setae absent; ventral side of each pamclypeus with a submarginal row of 40--50 very long hair-like setae; eyes small, reddish brown, each with a very long apical seta, ocular index about 4.8-5.5; ocelli very small, reddish brown, ocella.r index about 8.7-12.5; distance between ocelli about 5---6 times a distance of ocellus Crom eye; antennae yellowish brown to pale brown, its 3rd segment 1.00-1.18 limes longer than the 2nd segment; bucculae low anteriorly, very high posteriorly, its surface with numerous setigerous punctures beru-ing long· golden hairs; anterior half of guJar plate with golden hairs; r·ostrum pilose, yellowish brown to pale brown, reaching mid coxae.
Pronotum broad, ils cUsc (except callal areas) coarsely punctured and bearing long golden hair-like setae ( Fig. 2); umbones slightly swollen apically; anterior margin angularly concave centrally; lateral margins of pronotum with numerous (50-60) very long bair-like setae dorsally and ventrally.
Scutellum broad, evenly punctured, except fo1· antero-lateral angles which arc smooth and impunclale, punctures dark brown, bearing long g·olden hair-like setae ( Fig. 2); scutellar apex broad, tongue-like.
Corium clearly punclured, with dai·k punctures as large as or slightly smaller than those on scutellum, and with numerous long golden hair-like setae (Fig-. 2); clavus with two rows of punctures; mesocorium wHb t\vo rows of punctures paralleling clavo-corial suture, remaining surface of mesocoriaJ disc almost evenly punctured; lateral parts of corium, including the costal margin, with more lha11 fifty very long golden hair-like setae, hypocoslal laminae with a row of long golden hairlike selae; membrane sernihyaline, slightly e>.1endi 11g beyond the lip of abdomen.
Propleurou alutaceous, impunctate; meso- and metapleural evaporaloria typical of the genus, lateral parts of rneso- and mctapleuron wrinkled and striated.
Legs bearing numerous golden Jong hair-like sctae; hind tibiae conspicuously curved apically, its dorsal side flattened.
Abdominal slerna wHh numerous setigerous punctures bearing long golden hair-like setae. Male pygophore with numerous long hair-like setae ventrally, its dorsal opening as in Fig. 14, pammcre nUJT0w, with a few long· setae apically (Pig. 9).
Types. Hololype male: AUSTRALIA: Victoria: 3 ml. S. Hattah. Vic. , 7th March 1971, E. G. Matthews ( SAMA) ; Paratypes: South Australia: 2 females, Olympic Dam Site , 2-5 Nov 1987, E. G. Matthews, C. watts ( SAMA, DBUO) .
Etymology. The species name refers to numerous long· hair--like setae on body surface.
