Fully mycoheterotrophic herbs; plants whitish or purplish blue, 10–30 cm height; rhizomes tuberous, cylindrical, apical part densely covered with stiff scale-like leaves; stems unbranched, erect; leaves scale-like, appressed, ovoid or oblong, apex acute, 1–16 mm long, up to 4 mm wide, densely imbricate in stem, especially the middle part of stem, smallest in the lower part of the stem followed by the upper part of the stem; bracts like leaves imbricate in upper part of the stem; Inflorescence terminal, 4–15-flowered in simple or loosely bifurcate cyme; flowers salverform, subsessile, white to pale purplish blue, or perianth lobes pale blue and the rest of the flower whitish, 20–25 mm long; perianth tube slightly curved, cylindrical with six ribs from the apex of lobe to the base of ovary, about 9 mm long; perianth lobes white, violet, or pale blue with two whorls (3 1 3); outer lobes lanceolate, about 6 mm long, margins involute, from middle-upper to apex, apex acute, acuminate, rounded or caudate; inner lobes usually as long as the outer lobes, but distinctly narrower, apex acute or rounded, slight revolute; stamens three, below the inner lobes, with short filaments, connective with two apical lateral crests and one apical, median acute point, lacking basal spur; style filiform, bearing three short style branch stigmas at top, stigma dish to funnel shaped, hollow; ovary ca. 10 mm long, ellipsoid; capsule ellipsoid crowned by the persistent dry perianth tube and lobes, irregularly dehiscent; seeds numerous, triangular or subcircular, laterally flattened.

Phenology —Flowering and fruiting year round.

Distribution and Habitat —Distributed in tropical South America, especially along the Amazon Basin. This species usually grows in wet places from rain or non-inundated forest at elevations from sea level to 300 m, and often occurs on sandy soils along the margins of streams or creeks.

Notes — Campylosiphon purpurascens is similar to the new Campylosiphon species proposed in this study, both of which are easily recognized from other Campylosiphon species by their slightly curved perianth tubes and distinctly bifurcate inflorescence, but C. purpurascens is easily distinguished from the proposed new species by its stem with many leaves and blue flowers, while the proposed new species has stem with sparse leaves and usually white flowers.
