Plantas perennes. Rizoma generalmente tuberoso. Tallos trepadores, glabros. Hojas alternas, ovadas o cordiformes, enteras. Inflorescencias axilares, racimosas. Flores hermafroditas, actinomorfas. Sépalos 2, alados o ápteros. Pétalos 5. Estambres 5, adnados a la base de los pétalos. Ovario súpero, unilocular; carpelos 3. Fruto carnoso, monospermo.
Integrada por c. 22 especies –agrupadas en 4 géneros–, que se distribuyen por las regiones cálidas y tropicales de América, África y Asia.
