Plantas anuales, raramente perennantes. Hojas enteras, cuneadas en la base, no auriculadas. Flores hermafroditas, en verticilos paucifloros, rara vez todas iguales, por lo general di o trimorfas. Piezas externas del perianto fructífero libres, reflejas. Valvas dentadas o denticuladas, raramente subenteras, con una escama refleja en la base.
