Herbáceas, perennes. Hojas en su mayoría basales, las demás alternas. Flores hermafroditas, en inflorescencia espiciforme, formada por fascículos de 2-5 flores protegidos por una ócrea. Perianto tetrámero, con las 2 piezas externas menores, persistente. Estambres 6. Estilos 2; estigmas fimbriado-penicilados. Aquenio lenticular, con 2 alas laterales.
