Willdenow (1800) described Hibiscus longifolius View in CoL from Indian material. This species has generally been considered a synonym of the okra or lady’s fingers plant, Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench View in CoL . In The Bengal Dispensatory the combination Abelmoschus longifolius View in CoL appears, attributed to Wallich. This is a much earlier publication of the name than given in IPNI.
