Subspecies: The Syrian population is not assigned to any distinct subspecies.

Distribution: Uncertain status; apparently uncommon and in low numbers; occurs in wooded valleys of the coastal region and Sahl Al-Ghab, while it is extinct west of Aleppo ( Fig. 109 View FIGURE 109 ).

Previous records: Bush clad hills west of Aleppo ( Carruthers 1909), Latakia ( Talbot 1960; Harrison & Bates 1991), Slenfe mountains ( Serra 2004), Jabal Shoeh ( Masseti 2000), Abu Qubays and Al-Furunlok ( Daoud & Khalil 2009a, b), south of Aisam but extinct since 1993 (A Aidek, Syria, pers. comm. 2022).

Recent records: east of Slenfeh, Al-Furunlok and Abu Qubays (2008), Mashqita (2010), Deir Mama (2012), Masiat, ad-Daliah and Ghmam (2020–2021), and Ain ar-Rajm’ah (2022).
