Distribution — Native to Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa.

Nomenclatural notes — Stapf (1919) indicated a single collection as the type of Brachiaria dura , which has several duplicates in various herbaria. The specimen at K, where Stapf worked, is the logical choice for the lectotype, moreover because an analysis (drawing of various spikelet elements) by Stapf is attached to that sheet.
