Lectotype (Hitchcock in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 12: 125. 1908): Kalm, Herb. Linn. No. 1211.3 ( LINN; iso- US) .

Current name: Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash View in CoL View at ENA ( Poaceae ).

Note: Baum (in Canad. J. Bot. 45: 1850. 1967) rejected Hitchcock’s typification, proposing instead that Sloane’s cited t. 14, f. 2 (1707) should be the type. However, the material designated as type was evidently original material for A. nutans , and so Hitchcock’s choice has priority. Later authors concurring with Hitchcock’s choice include Voss (in Michigan Bot. 11: 31. 1972), McVaugh, (Fl. Novo-Galiciana 14: 142. 1983) and Veldkamp (in Taxon 33: 97. 1984).
