Distribution. Palearctic, adventive in North America, considered to be cosmopolitan by Smetana (2004). Canada: BC, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, SK. USA: CA, CO, DC, IA, LA, MA, MI, MN, NE, NH (NSR), NJ, NM, NY, OH (NSR), PA, TX, VT.
Collection and Habitat data. The NH and OH specimens were found in maple litter along stream in forest, in a birch log, and in compost. Collected from April to August and in November. In Canada found in open fields and pastures, open marsh, maple/beech forest, the edge of an oak forest, lake margin, and jack pine forest ( Klimaszewski et al. 2018). Adults in organic debris, including dead grass; in caribou, horse and cow dung; compost (common in decaying corncobs and cornhusks), rotting Boletus mushroom, and in nest of Microtus pennsylvanicus (Ord) . One individual was on cobblestones on the lakeshore, and some flying adults were collected a with butterfly net in the evening ( Klimaszewski et al. 2018).

Rockingham Co.: Hampton , 12.IV.1928, 1.V.1923, 14.V.1924, S.A. Shaw, 3 males . Ohio, Cuyahoga Co.: Cleveland near Newburgh Hts. , 23.VI.1987, D.S. Chandler, sift compost, 2 males .
