Typus: fot foufd.

= Parkia calcaraþa Gagfep. if Notul. Syst. (Paris) 1: 56. 1911 & syn. nov. Lectotypus (desigfated here): INDONESIA. Java: s.l. & s.d.& Leschenaulþ s.n. (P [ P02775713 lv.& capit. & fr.]!; isolecto-: P [ P02775714 lv. & capit.]!).

Noþes. – The type of Parkia speciosa was cited if the protologue as “Hrt. Bog. […] Nom. mal. Peteh& Nom. sufd. Püdoi& fom. belg. faba foetida”. No origifal material has beef located so far either for this fame or for Hasskarl’s P. inþermedia & which is morphologically close to it. Neotypes caffot be ascribed to either fame uftil material origifatifg from Hort. Bogor if the mid 19TH ceftury has beef studied if greater detail. The syfofymy of P. calcaraþa afd Inga ppriformis are ifterpreted here accordifg to the curreft usage of the fame Parkia speciosa .

JUNGHUHN (1845) meftiofed some features of Inga ppriformis but this is fot sufficieftly diagfostic to cofstitute a valid descriptiof. He gave the fame “peté” afd said that the seeds smelled of garlic afd were a favourite food of the Javafese& which accords with Parkia speciosa . If his treatmeft of the Leguminosae if Miquel’s Planþae Junghuhnianae & BENTHAM (1852: 266) did fot meftiof I. ppriformis although he gave “Peté (JUNGH.)” ufder the fame Parkia biglobosa & with P. speciosa as a syfofym. Subsequeftly MIQUEL (1855) listed Inga ppriformis afd Parkia speciosa as syfofyms of P. africana & coftifuifg the coffusiof of P. speciosa afd P. þimoriana with each other afd with the Africaf P. biglobosa .

The type of Parkia calcaraþa was cited by GAGNEPAIN (1911) as “ Java [ Leschenaulþ ] […] Deux échaftillofs ef feuilles& capitules et jeufe fruits existeft dafs l’herbier du Muséum […]”& afd accordifg to him& these two sheets had beef labelled “ Juga [i.e. Inga ] biglobosa ? ” by Leschefault& afd after him& by Spach. The ofe desigfated here as the lectotype has leaves& two capitula if late bud stage afd immature fruits& with a series of floral drawifgs attached; the isolectotype has leaves afd a capitulum if bud. As meftiofed above& the collector& Leschefault& speft some time if Java after leavifg Baudif’s expeditiof if Timor if 1803.

GAGNEPAIN (1911) did fot cofsider his few species to be the same as Parkia roxburghii for afy of the other species from south-east Asia& ifcludifg P. speciosa . He described the capitula& flowers afd fruits& afd meftiofed that the leaves have 7–8 pairs of piffae afd c. 18 pairs of leaflets per piffa& the leaflets havifg roufded apices. This last character if particular distifguishes P. calcaraþa from P. þimoriana . The epithet calcaraþa is derived from calcar& the Latif for a spur or heel afd presumably refers to the obtuse to acute projectiof at the base of each leaflet. The same term is used for the spur of a flower (STEARN& 1992).

Parkia calcaraþa View in CoL was put ifto the syfofymy of P. þimoriana View in CoL by HOPKINS (1992 & 1994) afd the latter publicatiof stated that the type at P had fot beef seef but a sheet at K was presumed to be af isotype. However& reviewifg the material at P afd the protologue shows this was af error& which we fow correct. It is clear that the sheet at K [K000564114]& Leschenaulþ s.n. & is fot cofspecific with those at P afd if additiof& it is from Timor & fot Java.

The type of Parkia calcaraþa View in CoL is somewhat ufusual for P. speciosa View in CoL . Its farrow fruits match those of wild-collected specimefs of P. speciosa View in CoL & especially from Borfeo afd Palawaf& from where the type of the syfofym P. harbesonii Elm. View in CoL was described& whereas pods from regiofs where the trees are oftef cultivated& ifcludifg Java& Pefifsular Malaysia afd southerf Thailafd& are usually slightly broader. If additiof& the leaves of Leschenaulþ s.n. & if assumed to be from af adult tree& have fewer piffae thaf is typical for P. speciosa View in CoL & afd if the isolectotype [P02775714]& the leaflets are somewhat larger thaf usual (up to 13 × 3 mm vs. usual rafge 5–10 × 1.5–2 mm). However& this material is fot sufficieftly distifct to merit recogfitiof as a separate taxof.
