Triplaris apetala (Wedd.) Walp. (1852: 295) View in CoL ≡ Ruprechtia apetala Wedd. (1849: 268)
Notes:— Weddell (1849: 268) published the species Ruprechtia apetala using his own collection by citing “Nascitur in sylvis humilibus Boliviae australis, juxta Pilcomayo fluminis oras, unde Januario fructiferma ipse inveni ( Cat . nostr. [Catalogus nostrum], n° 3873)”. Three year later Walpers (1852) recombine Weddell’s name under the genus Triplaris , and included it in the sect. Ruprechtia . The description by Walpers (1852) is verbatim the same as Weddell’s original one. Brandbyge (1986) questioned whether this was a valid publication of a Triplaris species. He considered it possibly a reprint of Weddell’s original publication, and excluded the name from his treatment of Triplaris . This is, however, a valid publication of a Triplaris apetala as Walpers (1852) was very clear: the species belonged to the sect. Ruprechtia of genus Triplaris , not to a separate genus Ruprechtia . As a consequence, the proper authority is therefore T. apetala (Wedd.) Walp. (see also POWO 2022) and not T. apetala Walp. as it was listed by Brandbyge (1986) and IPNI (2022).
