Distribution: Nicobar Islands, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sunda Islands, Borneo, Sulawesi, Maluku ( Regalado, 1990; Jayanthi et al., 2009).

Notes: Medinilla speciosa and M. sieboldiana are here synonymized based on their morphological similarities with M. eximia . The name of M. eximia (basionym: Melastoma eximium ) is used here as the correct name following the priority rule (Art. 11.4, Turland et al., 2018), although usage of the name Medinilla speciosa is more frequent. The neotype of M. eximia is here chosen from a locality close to that of the lost original type of Jack’s from Sumatra ( Jack, 1823). Medinilla sieboldiana was established by Planchon from the unpublished name Medinilla eximia Siebold (non Blume) ( Planchon, 1849). Triana (1872) stated that the unpublished name represented Melastoma eximium Siebold (non Jack) and synonymized it under M. sieboldiana . The original spelling M. sieboldtiana was corrected to M. sieboldiana (Hooker, 1852; Triana, 1872; Cogniaux, 1891).
