40. Medinilla clarkei King,J. Asiat.Soc. Bengal, Pt. View in CoL 2, Nat. Hist. 69(1): 63. 1900. Lectotype (designated here): MALAYSIA, Peninsular Malaysia , [Perak state], B. Scortechini 243 (E [ E00276204 ]; isolecto GH [ GH00072457 ], L [ L 0008953 ], SING [ SING0045556 About SING ]).
Medinilla pahangensis Ridl., J. Linn. Soc. View in CoL 38: 310. 1908. Lectotype (designated here): MALAYSIA, Peninsular Malaysia, [Pahang state], Gunong Tahan, L. Wray & H.C. Robinson 5396 (BM [ BM000796105 ]; isolecto K [ K000867092 ], SING [ SING0045559 About SING ]).
Distribution: Malay Peninsula, Sumatra ( Maxwell, 1978).
Notes: Maxwell (1978) stated that M. perakensis King was a synonym of M. clarkei based on the morphological similarity of pustulate stems, whorled leaves and axillary inflorescences. However, both species are actually significantly different. Medinilla clarkei differs from M. perakensis by having scattered pustulate stems (vs. dense pustulate stems), small obovate leaves [3–9.5 × 1–5 cm] with triplinerve venation (vs. large ovate leaves [11–15 × 6.5–9 cm] with 5–7-plinerve venation), smaller cyme [2–6 cm long] with glabrous axes (vs. larger cyme [up to 7 cm long] densely red brown furfuraceus). Therefore, M. perakensis is considered here as a separate species from M. clarkei . Medinilla crassiramea M.R.Hend. was considered a variety of M. clarkei ( Maxwell, 1978) , but it is here excluded because of its close resemblance to M. perakensis .
