Root perennial, fusiform. Stem 80-150 cm, stiffly erect, slender. Leaves 8-15 times as long as wide, narrowly lanceolate, undulate. Inflorescence long, narrow, crowded, nearly leafless. Pedicels up to twice as long as valves, filiform. Valves 3 -5-5 x 3 -2~4- 8 mm, slightly cordate at base, rounded at apex, entire, without tubercles. Nut 2-3 x 1 -0-1 - 5 mm. 2« = 40. Riversides and seashores; more or less halophilous. E. Europe, extending to E. Sweden and E. Austria. Au Fe Hu Rs (N, B, C, W, E) Su.
