At least some of the roots tuberous. Stems 20-60 cm. Valves 5-8 x 5-8 mm. Mediterranean region; Romania and S.E. Russia. Bu Co Ga Gr It Ju Rm Rs (E) Sa Tu.
A polymorphic species, comprising several geographical races and in need of further study (vide K. H. Rechinger, Candollea 12: 29 ff. (1949)).
