Stems 30-45(-60) cm, erect, simple, stout, hispid. Leaves sparsely hispid, ovate, acute; cauline cordate-amplexicaul. Inflorescence 10- to 50-flowered, capitate. Calyx 14-17 mm. Petal-limb bright scarlet, bifid for | of its length. Carpophore 4-6 mm. Woods and thickets. U.S.S. R. from c. 47° to 55 ° N. Rs (W, C, E).

Often cultivated for ornament.
