Plants solitary, larger than in 1 and 3. Leaves erect or inclined; lamina c. 3 0x 7 mm, linear-oblanceolate; petiole 5- 10 cm, glabrous. Scape apparently terminal, as in 1, but 10- 18 cm, bearing 3-6 flowers. Petals 6 mm. Capsule smooth. Testa reticulate, loose-fitting. 2n = 40. D. x obovata Mert. & Koch in Rohling, Deutschl. FI. ed. 3,2: 502 (1826) ( D. anglica x rotundifolia ) is fairly frequent, but sterile. Its leaves are rather like those of 3, but the scape is apparently terminal, the capsule very small, and the seeds empty.
