Herbáceas o leñosas, a veces trepadoras. Hojas simples, alternas. Flores hermafroditas, actinomorfas o zigomorfas, generalmente trímeras, a menudo ginandras. Perianto de una sola envoltura, tubular. Estambres 6-12. Pistilo ínfero, hexalocular. Fruto capsular.
Integrada por c. 625 especies agrupadas en 6 géneros, que se distribuyen por las regiones templadas y tropicales de Europa , América, África y Asia.
