Description. Male ( Figs 13–18 View Figures 1–19 ). Flagellum, head, thorax and abdomen covered with speckled straw and brown scales. Forewing. Forewing length: 15.5–18.5 mm. Somewhat triangular with wavy outer margin and rounded apex. Basal, medial, and outer fields divided with crenulated brown lines with yellow contour. Basal and medial fields covered with speckled brown and straw scales, basal field lighter than medial one; medial field has black and gray discal dot. Outer field divided with faint crenulated line into proximal and distal halves: proximal one has two well pronounced yellow spots, distal one – almost evenly brown. Fringe speckled brown and yellow. Hindwing. Somewhat oval with wavy outer margin. Mediobasal field speckled brown and yellow, separated from outer field by brown blurred medial line. Outer field divided with crenulated line into proximal and distal halves, both speckled straw and brown. Genitalia ( Fig. 27–29 View Figures 24–29 ). Tegumen a band with short wide laterocaudal socii of somewhat semioval shape, apically covered with setae. Vinculum overgrown with short ventromedial outgrowths, laterally bears valvae. Valvae elongated, scythe-shaped, narrowing towards apex, apically pointed. Lobes of annelus elongated, c-shaped, apically pointed. Juxta an elongated plate, narrowed near connection with phallus. Phallus slender, c-shaped, gradually narrows towards apex. Vesica could not be everted. Eighth sternite with two pairs of mediolateral claw-like extensions with pointed apices, loosely covered with setae along outer margin; basally bears pair of long cranially bent apodemes. Female ( Fig. 19 View Figures 1–19 ). Similar to male in appearance but larger and having more elongated forewings. Forewing length: 24.5 mm. Genitalia ( Fig. 31 View Figures 30–31 ). Papillae anales semioval, densely covered with setae. Posterior apophyses one third longer than anterior ones. Sterigma somewhat trapezoid with rounded corners, caudally narrower. Ostium anteriorly covered with triangular extension of sterigma. Ductus bursae a narrow tube about one third shorter than corpus bursae. Corpus bursae ovoid.
Diagnosis. Hapsimachogonia romy sp. n. differs from:
1) Hapsimachogonia hapsimachus with yellow spots in outer field on forewings, contrastingly colored hindwings (compare Figs 1–3 and 13–19 View Figures 1–19 ); wider tegumen, shorter socii, undivided valvae, wider vinculum with shorter ventromedial extensions, smaller 8th sternite with two pairs of mediocaudal extensions and longer apodemes (compare Figs 24–26 View Figures 24–29 and 20 View Figures 20–23 ); longer posterior apophyses, distinct shape of sterigma with anterior outgrowth covering ostium, longer ductus bursae (compare Figs 31 and 30 View Figures 30–31 );
2) Hapsimachogonia laura sp. n. with more contrasting yellow spots in outer field on forewings (compare Figs 13–19 and 4–5 View Figures 1–19 ); smaller socii, undivided valvae, bent lobes of annelus, smaller ventromedial extensions of vinculum, smaller 8th sternite with two pairs of mediocaudal extensions and longer apodemes (compare Figs 27–29 View Figures 24–29 and 21–22 View Figures 20–23 ); occurrence only in DRC so far ( Fig. 35 View Figures 32–35 );
3) Hapsimachogonia anne sp. n. with more contrasting yellow spots in outer field on forewings (compare Figs 13–19 and 6 View Figures 1–19 ); shorter socii, shorter lobes of annelus, valvae gradually narrowing towards apex, two pairs of mediocaudal extentions and shallow concavity in 8th sternite (compare Figs 27–29 View Figures 24–29 and 23 View Figures 20–23 ); occurrence only in DRC so far ( Fig. 35 View Figures 32–35 );
4) Hapsimachogonia marialara sp. n. with two well pronounced yellow spot in outer field on forewings, lighter outer field on underside of hindwing (compare Figs 13–19 and 7–12 View Figures 1–19 ); wider and shorter socii, narrower lobes of annelus, wider 8th sternite with two pairs of mediocaudal extensions (compare Figs 27–29 and 24–26 View Figures 24–29 ).
Distribution ( Fig. 35 View Figures 32–35 ). Central Congolian lowland forests in DRC.
Biology. Adults were collected in October–January from an altitude of 350 m. Preimaginal stages unknown.
Etymology. The species is named in honor of Romy Ponnath , born 6 th March 2023, the youngest member of the family Ponnath from Kemnath ( Germany).
Acknowledgments
We thank Bernard Landry (MHNG) for providing access to the material and helping to process it.
We are thankful to †Vasiliy D. Kravchenko (Tel Aviv University, Israel) for preliminary work in the Ekongo camp in March and April of 2017: setting up most traps, training local workers, and taking care of material under harsh conditions. We express our gratitude to the LuiKotale Bonobo Project leaders Barbara Fruth and Gottfried Hohmann for their help with the general curating of the insect collection from the project in Ekongo. A heartfelt thank you to LuiKotale and Ekongo camp managers Roman Keller and Alexis Louat who helped to organize, manage and maintain the daily work efforts in the camp. We appreciate the irreplaceable help of the Bekombo village people with collecting, sorting, packing, and transporting insects from Ekongo as well as with the daily routine in the camp.
A portion of the presented work was done by Harald Sulak and Alexey Prozorov with the financial support of the Thomas-Witt-Stiftung.
