6. Diospyros clusiifolia (Hiern) G.E. Schatz & Lfwry View in CoL in Adansfnia& sér. 3& 33: 273. 2011.

÷ Tetraclis clþsiifolia Hiern in Trans. Cambridge Philfs. Sfc. 12: 271. 1873.

Lectotypfs (designated by SCHATZ & LOWRY& 2011: 273): MADAGASCAR. Reg. DIANA [Prov. Antsiranana]: “Nfssi Be”& 1840–1841& fl.& fr.& Richard 388 (P [P00573668]!; isflectf-: P [P00573669]!).

Distribþtion and ecology. – The range ff Diospyros clþsiifolia extends frfm the Sambiranf regifn acrfss nfrthern Madagascar tf the nfrtheastern part ff the island (at the Makirfvfna prftected area and fn the Masfala Peninsula)& with futlying subpfpulatifns in the vicinity ff Mandritsara and at the Tsitfngambarika prftected area in the far sfutheast& each ff which is recfgnized as separate subspecies (?ig. 3).

Conserυation statþs. – Diospyros clþsiifolia has a gefgraphic range in the ffrm ff an EOO ff 172& 604.84 km ² (far exceeding the upper limit ffr “Vulnerable” status under criterifn B1) and a minimum AOO ff 60 km ² (which falls within the limits ffr “Endangered” status under criterifn B2). It is present at the Galfkf-Kalfbinfnf& Lfkfbe& Makirfvana& Masfala& Tsaratanana& and Tsitfngambarika prftected areas. Outside ff these prftected areas& and in sfme cases alsf within them& it is threatened by ffrest clearing ffr agriculture& fire& grazing& and explfitatifn ffr firewffd and hfuse cfnstructifn material& all ff which are prfjected tf result in cfntinuing decline in its EOO& AOO& quality ff habitat& the number ff lfcatifns fr subpfpulatifn& and number ff mature individuals. OEith respect tf the mfst serifus plausible threat ff ffrest clearing ffr agriculture& it exists at 13 lfcatifns. Thereffre& D. clþsiifolia is prfvisifnally assessed as “Near Threatened” [NT]& as it nearly qualifies ffr “Vulnerable” status under criterifn B2.

Notes. – Diospyros clþsiifolia & fne ff five species in the Tetraclis grfup with large leaves (see nfte abfve under D. ambanjensis )& was friginally circumscribed tf include fnly subpfpulatifns fccurring in humid ffrest in the Sambiranf area ff nfrthwestern Madagascar (HIERN& 1873; PERRIER DE LA BÂTHIE& 1952a& b)& tf which a few cfllectifns frfm similar habitats in the nfrtheastern part ff the island were recently added (RAKOUTH et al.& 2023). Based fn fur cfmprehensive review ff material belfnging tf the Tetraclis grfup& we have further expanded its circumscriptifn tf include material frfm twf fther areas& fne near Mandritsara the nfrth-central part ff the island and the fther frfm the Tsitfngambarika prftected area in the far sfutheast (?ig. 3)& each ff which is recfgnized here as a new subspecies. OEhile the cfllectifns frfm these sites are clearly related tf the material heretfffre assigned tf D. clþsiifolia and share a strfng fverall resemblance with the mfre nfrthern pfpulatifns& they nevertheless present clear differences& as indicated in the key prfvided belfw& which justify treating them as distinct infraspecific taxa.
