Tree, 10 m tall, bark smooth, light yellow, branches smooth, striate, stipules early deciduous. Bud 6–7 × 12 mm, sepals deltoid, outer side pubescent, inner side pubescent, margin glabrous, glands absent, petals elliptic to oblanceolate, unguiculate, glabrous, glands present. Stamens of different sizes, antesepalous filaments 9–11 mm long, antepetalous filaments 6–7 mm long. Stipe glabrous, 1–2 mm long. Ovary semicircular, commonly D-shaped, glabrous, sometimes with trichomes in the carpel cleft, 3(–4) mm long. Fruit a legume, dehiscent, orbicular, with a protuberance at the apex, compressed, 3.7 × 2 cm, stipitate, nectary disc not persistent, glabrous, glands absent, veins present, not winged.

Phenology —Collected in flower between October and November and in fruit between July and August.

Distribution and habitat— Peltogyne paradoxa is restricted to the state of Amapá and northern Pará, near igarapés or floodplains ( Fig 4 View FIGURE 4 ).

Taxonomic comments —The diagnostic feature of this species is the leaflets covered in white wax. It is confused with P. densiflora and P. maranhensis due to the size of the buds, but is easily distinguished by the leaflets and fruits with a protuberance at the apex.

Etymology— paradoxa , paradoxical, alluding to the appearance (leaflets and fruits) that is unique among the other species.
