24. Peltogyne subsessilis W.A.Rodrigues, Acta Amazonica View in CoL 4(3): 7. 1974

Holotype:— BRAZIL. Amazonas: Manaus, 15 February 1971, L. Coêlho & D. Coêlho 95 (Holotype: INPA ! ( INPA 28480); Paratypes: INPA ! ( INPA 15713, INPA 18595). Fig 29 View FIGURE 29 .

Tree, 16 m tall, bark smooth, yellowish, branches smooth, lenticellate, stipules early deciduous. Leaflets elliptic, not falcate, 5 × 2.5 cm, base rounded, apex acute, caudate, glabrous, wax absent on both surfaces, discolorous, petiole 17–23 mm long, petiolule 3–4 mm long, blade not decurrent, pulvinus not dilated, primary vein inconspicuous adaxially and conspicuous abaxially, secondary veins conspicuous on both sides, glands present. Inflorescence a panicle, terminal, sometimes axillary, laxiflorous, rachis pubescent, 9–13 cm long, inserted in a non-aphyllous branch. Pedicel 1 mm long, bracteoles caducous, hypanthium absent. Bud 3 × 3 mm, sepals orbicular, outer side pubescent, inner side glabrous, glands present, petals elliptic, sessile, glabrous, glands present. Stamens of different sizes, antesepalous filaments 2 mm long, antepetalous filaments 1 mm long. Stipe glabrous except on the abaxial side, 1 mm long. Ovary elliptic to rhombic, glabrous, 1.5–2 mm long. Fruit a legume, dehiscent, orbicular, without a protuberance, inflated, inflatedcompressed, 3 × 2.4 cm, sessile, nectary disc not persistent, glabrous, glands present, veins absent, not winged.

Phenology —Collected in flower from November to February and in fruit from April to December.

Distribution and habitat— Peltogyne subsessilis is only found in the Floresta Nacional do Jamari in Rondônia and on the highway between Manaus and Itacoatiara in Amazonas ( Fig 5 View FIGURE 5 ).

Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne subsessilis has leaves with rounded base, long petioles (17–23 mm), petals with glands, and a glabrous ovary. It is sometimes confused with P. heterophylla due to the shape of the leaflets and the orbicular buds with short pedicels. However, P. heterophylla has leaflets with an attenuate base, a short petiole (5–7 mm), petals without glands, and a pubescent ovary. Among the Amazonian species, P. subsessilis has inflatedcompressed fruits as a diagnostic character, which differentiates it from the other species, except for P. recifenses . Peltogyne subsessilis can be distinguished from P. recifensis based on its leaflets with a non-decurrent blade, non-dilated pulvinus, and sessile fruits, while P. recifensis has leaflets with a decurrent blade, dilated pulvinus, and fruits with a short stipe.

Etimology—sub, a little; sessilis, sessile, referring the very short pedicel.
