Lectotype (designated by M. F. da Silva 1976):—s.l., s.d, Pittier 10973, not seen ; Isotype: US (scanned image)) .
Tree, 7–31 m tall, bark smooth, reddish, branches longitudinally striate, stipules early deciduous. Leaflets elliptic to obovate, falcate, 8.8–10.5 × 3.8–4.5 cm, base attenuate, sometimes rounded, apex acute, acuminate, glabrous (except on the abaxial vein), wax absent on both surfaces, concolorous, petiole 14–18 mm long, petiolule 3–5 mm long, blade decurrent, pulvinus dilated, primary vein conspicuous abaxially and pilose throughout, secondary veins conspicuous on both sides, glands absent. Inflorescence a panicle, terminal, laxiflorous, rachis velutinous, 18–25 cm long, inserted in a non-aphyllous branch. Pedicel 3–4 mm long, bracteoles caducous, hypanthium present, 2 × 3 mm, campanulate. Bud 3–4 × 3–4 mm, sepals deltoid to oval, outer side pubescent, inner side pubescent, margin glabrous, glands present, petals oblanceolate, unguiculate, glabrous, glands present. Stamens of different sizes, antesepalous filaments 5–6 mm long, antepetalous filaments 3–4 mm long. Stipe pubescent like the ovary, angled in relation to the carpel, 2–3 mm long. Ovary oblong, pubescent, 3(–4) mm long, style with terminal insertion, 8–12 mm long. Fruit a legume, dehiscent, triangular (cymitiform), without a protuberance, compressed, 4–5× 2–3 cm, stipitate, nectary disc not persistent, pubescent, glands absent, veins present, not winged.
Phenology —Collected in flower from November to April and in fruit from February to August.
Distribution and habitat— Peltogyne paniculata is the species with the widest geographic distribution in the genus. It can be found in non-flooded (Terra Firme) areas, near floodplains and igapós. In Brazil, it occurs in the states of Acre, Amazonas, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Pará, Roraima, and Amapá. In Colombia, it occurs in the departments of Antioquia and Santander. In Venezuela, it is common in rainforests. In Guyana, it occurs near the Mazaruni River. In Suriname, it is found at the confluence of the Zuid and Lucie rivers. Finally, in French Guiana, it is found near Cayenne ( Fig 4 View FIGURE 4 ).
Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne paniculata can be easily identified by the inflated hypanthium, which gives the bud a pyriform appearance, the long stipe that is pubescent like the ovary, the 25 cm long laxiflorous inflorescence, and the leaflets with a primary vein that is pilose along its entire length on the abaxial side, which can be seen under a magnifying glass. The fruits have a peculiar shape among the Leguminosae , which Bentham (1870) called cymitiform, alluding to the shape of a scimitar, a typical Arab sword. Bentham (1840) described P. pubescens , but with a certain similarity to P. paniculata . Ducke (1922) suggested that P. pubescens was a variety of P. paniculata , because the characteristics varied only in terms of pubescence and flower size. We consider P. pubescens to be synonymous with P. paniculata , because in our analyses, there were no clear distinctive characteristics that could separate the taxa.
Etymology— paniculata = panicle-bearing, referring the largest panicle among the species of the genus.
