16. Peltogyne mattosiana Rizzini, Revista View in CoL Brasil. Biol. 31: 195. 1971.
Holotype:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro, Santa Maria Madalena, Área do Horto Frutícola Santos Lima , 19 March 1955, E. Pereira 1272 (Holotype: RB!; Isotype: INPA !). Fig 21 View FIGURE 21 .
Tree 4–18 m tall, bark smooth, lenticellate, brown, branches longitudinally scaly, lenticellate, stipules early deciduous. Leaflets elliptic, falcate, 6–9 × 3–4 cm, base attenuate, apex acute, slightly retuse, glabrous, wax absent on both surfaces, concolorous, petiole 10–15 mm long, petiolule 2–4 mm long, blade decurrent, pulvinus dilated, primary vein inconspicuous adaxially and conspicuous abaxially, secondary veins conspicuous on both sides, glands absent. Inflorescence a panicle, terminal, laxiflorous, rachis glabrous, 7–11 cm long, inserted in a non-aphyllous branch. Pedicel 3–5 mm long, bracteoles caducous, hypanthium absent. Bud 3–4 × 4–5 mm, sepals orbicular to deltoid, outer side pubescent, inner side glabrous, glands present, petals elliptic or slightly oblanceolate, sessile, glabrous, glands absent. Stamens of different sizes, antesepalous filaments 4–5 mm long, antepetalous filaments 3–4 mm long. Stipe glabrous, 1 mm (or less) long. Ovary semicircular, glabrous, 2–3 mm long, style with subterminal insertion, 3–4 mm long. Fruit a legume, dehiscent, orbicular, without a protuberance, compressed, 2.8–3 × 2–2.5 cm, stipitate, nectary disc not persistent, glabrous, glands present, veins absent, not winged.
Phenology —Collected in flower from November to December and in fruit between December and January.
Distribution and habitat— Peltogyne mattosiana is restricted to the Atlantic Forest, mainly to mountains in the state of Rio de Janeiro and southern Minas Gerais ( Fig 3 View FIGURE 3 ).
Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne mattosiana can be distinguished by its glabrous petiole, attenuate leaflet base, acute (sometimes acuminate) apex, concolorous leaves, and dehiscent legume. It is commonly confused with P. discolor , which occurs in the Southeast of Brazil, due to the elliptic leaflets and the size of the flowers and buds, and the orbicular fruits. In P. discolor , however, the petiole is pilose, the leaflets have an oblique base, and an emarginate apex, and the legume is indehiscent.
Etymology— mattosiana , from Mattos, a tribute to the anatomist Armando de Mattos Filho.
