Tree, 9–20 m high, bark peeling off in plates or scales, a brownish color exposed below the plates, branches striate and scaly, lenticellate, brownish, stipules early deciduous. Leaflets elliptic, not falcate, 3–5 × 2–2.5 cm, base oblique, apex emarginate, glabrous, wax absent on both surfaces, discolorous, petiole 4–10 mm long, highly pilose, petiolule 1–2 mm long, blade decurrent, pulvinus dilated, primary vein inconspicuous adaxially and conspicuous abaxially, secondary veins conspicuous on both sides, glands absent. Inflorescence a panicle, subterminal, laxiflorous, rachis velutinous, 3.5–5 cm long, inserted in a non-aphyllous branch. Pedicel 2–5 mm long, bracteoles caducous, hypanthium absent. Bud 3–4 × 3–4 mm, sepals orbicular to deltoid, outer side velutinous, inner side glabrous, glands present, petals elliptic to orbicular, sessile, glabrous, glands present. Stamens of different sizes, antesepalous filaments 3–3.5 mm long, antepetalous filaments 1–2 mm long. Ovary semicircular, commonly D-shaped, tomentose, 2–3 mm long, style with terminal insertion, 2 mm long. Fruit a legume, indehiscent, orbicular, without a protuberance, compressed, 2–3 × 1.8–2.5 cm, stipitate, nectary disc not persistent, glabrous, glands present, veins present, winged.
Phenology —Collected in flower in September to October and in fruit in May.
Distribution and habitat— Peltogyne discolor is endemic to the state of Rio de Janeiro, occurring in montane forests or more rarely in restingas ( Fig 3 View FIGURE 3 ).
Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne discolor , the type species of the genus, is distinguished from the other species by having one of the smallest leaflets (3–5 cm long) with an oblique base and a pilose petiole. P. discolor is sometimes confused with P. pauciflora , but it can be clearly distinguished from it by its glabrous, elliptic leaflets with an emarginate apex, early deciduous stipules, and orbicular fruits, while P. pauciflora has obovate leaflets with a pilose base, persistent stipules, and oblong fruits. Silva (1976) mentioned P. discolor as occurring in the state of Rio de Janeiro and southern Bahia. However, the analysis of the specimen collected by Curran 74 (RB!, US (scanned image) showed that the material consists of only a young branch and fruit. Despite the deficient material, it is possible to see that the specimen is P. chrysopis , later described by Barneby (1994), and the defficient sample may have contributed to the misidentification by Silva (1976).
Etymology— discolor , another color. It refers to the different colors of the abaxial and adaxial sides of the leaflets.
