Holotype:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: Magé, Serra dos Órgãos, B. Luschnath BR 5202737 (Holotype: BR).
Tree, treelet or shrub, 2.5 to 40 meters tall, bark smooth, rough, or scaly (in plates) when on dry land, buttress roots present, release of exudates when injured, rhytidome grayish, yellowish, reddish, or brownish, branches smooth or rough, lenticels present or absent (not very conspicuous), grayish or blackish, stipules early deciduous, exceptionally persistent. Leaves bifoliolate, compound. Leaflets elliptic, oblong, oval, obovate or lanceolate, falcate or non-falcate, base rounded, attenuate or oblique, apex caudate, acuminate, acute, obtuse or retuse, glabrous, pubescent at the base and on the primary vein or with the presence of wax, sometimes lustrous, concolorous or discolorous, petiole cylindrical, with dilated ends, leaf blade decurrent or not decurrent, pulvinus dilated or not dilated, primary vein conspicuous or inconspicuous on the abaxial and adaxial surfaces, secondary veins conspicuous or inconspicuous, glands present or absent. Inflorescence a panicle or corymb, terminal or subterminal, densiflorous or laxiflorous, rachis with velutinous, pubescent or glabrous indumentum, inserted in an aphyllous or non-aphyllous branch. Flower with cylindrical pedicel, bracteoles deciduous or persistent until pre-anthesis, hypanthium present or absent, obconic, cylindrical or campanulate; calyx with 4 lobes of similar size, orbicular, deltoid, subtriangular or oval, outer surface sericeous, tomentose, pubescent or velutinous, sometimes glabrous, inner surface glabrous or pubescent, margin glabrous or not glabrous, glands sometimes present on the veins; corolla pentamerous, petals equal in size, linear, elliptic or oblanceolate, unguiculate or not unguiculate, glabrous or pubescent only on the central vein, glands present or absent; 10 stamens of equal or different sizes, 5+5, the antepetalous filaments smaller than the antesepalous filaments, nectary disc internal to the stamens verticil, persistent in the fruit or not; stipe present or very reduced, inserted at the base of the ovary and in the center of the nectary disc; nectary disc annular, fixed on the inner side of the hypanthium, sometimes glabrous, pubescent or with sparse trichomes, glands present or absent; ovary semicircular, D-shaped, elliptic, subtriangular or rhombic, totally or partially pubescent, sometimes with the carpel cleft totally glabrous; style with terminal or subterminal insertion, stigma peltate. Fruit dehiscent or indehiscent legume, orbicular, triangular, subtriangular or cymitiform, compressed, sometimes inflated-compressed, stipitate or sessile, veins present or absent, winged or not winged. Seed 1 per fruit, rarely 2, compressed, blackish, lustrous, oblong, aril present.
