Checklist of Erythrogonia species

The annotated checklist provided below is adapted from Freytag (2015) and Dmitriev et al. (2024). Distributional records of previously known species were compiled from the works of Medler (1963), Young (1977), Zanol & de Menezes (1982), Freytag & Sharkey (2002), Wilson et al. (2009), Mejdalani et al. (2009), Freytag (2015), Mejdalani & Cavichioli (2016), Keil & Lozada (2021), Froza et al. (2021), Pinedo-Escatel et al. (2024), and Takiya et al. (2024). An asterisk (*) after a locality name indicates a new distribution record.

Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Rio Grande do Sul, DZUP .

17. E. calva (Taschenberg, 1884) ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–6 )— Venezuela (no additional information available [record probably incorrect]), Brazil (states of Mato Grosso *, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul), and Argentina (no additional information available) .

Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Mato Grosso, DZUP .

Comments: The record of E. calva from Venezuela is likely incorrect, especially considering the distance between this country and the confirmed records of this species from Brazil and Argentina. The Venezuelan record is perhaps due to an incorrect specimen identification or mistaken label data.

18. E. clavata Freytag, 2015 — Colombia (department of Putumayo).

19. E. colorata ( Germar, 1821) ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–6 )— Brazil (states of Mato Grosso *, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo) .

Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Maranhão, DZUP ; 1♂, state of Ceará, DZRJ ; 1♀, state of Pernambuco, DZUP ; 1♀, state of Bahia, DZUP ; 5♂, 5♀, state of Tocantins, DZUP ; 1♂, state of Goiás, MZSP ; 3♂, state of Mato Grosso, MZSP ; 1♀, state of Paraná, DZUP .

Comments: Erythrogonia dottaga shares many external morphological similarities with E. comensa . The distribution of E. comensa is apparently restricted to southern Brazil and northern Argentina (see above); although more studies are necessary, there are indications that specimens identified as E. dottaga in these regions may actually belong to E. comensa .

27. E. dubia Medler, 1963 — Brazil (state of Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais) .

Comments: Medler (1963) suggests the existence of a sexguttata species complex, in which E. dubia would be included. Although more studies are needed to clarify this matter, there are indications that records attributed to E. dubia may in fact correspond to E. sexguttata .

Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Amapá, INPA .

Comments: According to Medler (1963) and Young (1977), E. laeta shares external and male terminalia similarities with various species, including E. anduzei , E. comensa , E. dottaga , E. dubia , E. fractina , E. gossana , E. mixta , E. partita , E. relegata , E. sexguttata , and E. spottana . There are indications that records of E. laeta in the states of São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul ( Zanol & de Menezes 1982) may be incorrect, actually referring to one or more of these similar species.

50. E. lateralis Freytag, 2015 — Colombia (department of Cauca).

51. E. laudata ( Walker, 1858) — Mexico (states of Yucatán and Chiapas) , Belize (no additional information available), Guatemala (departments of Alta Verapaz, Izabal, and Zacapa), and Honduras (departments of Atlántida and Francisco Morazán) .

52. E. leucospila ( Walker, 1858) — Peru (no additional information available).

Comments: As reported by Young (1977), E. leucospila is probably known only from the holotype deposited in the Natural History Museum, London, which has no abdomen.

61. E. onerata Melichar, 1926 — Peru (region of Huánuco).

62. E. partita Melichar, 1926 — Mexico (no additional information available), Costa Rica (provinces of Alajuela and San José), Panama (province of Chiriquí), and Venezuela (no additional information available).

Comments: The occurrence of E. partita in the state of Espírito Santo ( Zanol & de Menezes 1982), southeastern Brazil, is probably incorrect. Considering that its confirmed distribution is restricted to Central American countries and possibly Venezuela, the Brazilian record probably corresponds to E. sexguttata , a morphologically similar species.

63. E. peclyae sp. nov. — Brazil (state of Roraima).

64. E. pectinata Young, 1977 — French Guiana (commune of Roura) and Brazil (state of Pará).

Comments: The records from the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo ( Zanol & de Menezes 1982), southeastern Brazil, are likely incorrect. These records probably correspond to E. colorata or E. excisa , given their external morphological similarity.

Species excluded from Erythrogonia

Erythrogonia meridionalis Schmidt, 1928 View in CoL — Paraguay (“Rio Monday”).

Comment: Erythrogonia meridionalis Schmidt, 1928 syn. nov. of Tettisama quinquemaculata ( Germar, 1821) . Comparisons of the external morphology and color pattern of type specimens (photographs of the body in dorsal view) indicate that E. meridionalis is a junior synonym of T. quinquemaculata . A photograph of the holotype of E. meridionalis , deposited at the Museum and Institute of Zoology, Warsaw ( Poland), was provided by Wilson et al. (2009, specimen code E001377). A photograph of a type of Tettigonia quinquemaculata from Brazil, deposited at the Germar collection, Ivan Franko National University, Lviv ( Ukraine) (see Shydlovskyy & Holovachov 2005, specimen code ЕГр 521), is given on the internet site of that institution (http://zoomus.lviv.ua/GERMAR/ ZM3843web.htm).
