Type: — DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO. Bas-Congo, bassin de la Nsele, September1900, R.Butaye 1461 (holotype: BR0000008966940!).
Buchnera butayei De Wildeman nom. inval.(1921: 64).
Diagnosis: — Buchnera butayei ressembles B. decandollei Govaerts (1996: 14)) (= B. capitata Bentham 1846: 495 nom. illeg.) but differs in the obovate and broadly triangular bracts of 6.5–7 × 5.5–6.5 mm, hispid, ciliate at margin and undulate in the middle part, abruptly acuminate (elliptic, lanceolate or ovate to deltoid, never undulated or abruptly acuminate in B. decandollei ), the basal leaves obovate to oblong-ovate, 45–48 × 20 mm, densely covered with bluish papillae, upper leaves oblanceolate to lanceolate, 30–60 × 4–12 mm (upper leaves not different from basal leaves in B. decandollei ), and the calyx finely hairy all over (calyx hairy on the ribs and in the upper part in B. decandollei ).
Description: —Annual erect herb, 30–38 cm tall, stems simple, finely hairy Leaves sessile, opposite, the basal leaves obovate or oblong-ovate, 45–48 × 20 mm, densely covered with numerous blue papillae on upper surface, apex obtuse, the upper leaves oblong-elliptic, oblanceolate to lanceolate, 30–60 × 4–12 mm, hispid on both sides, slightly acute. Inflorescence racemose, in terminal short compact spikes, 10–20 × 12–14 mm, bracts broadly triangular, 6.5–7 × 5.5–6.5 mm, cuneiform, abruptly contracted at base, cuspidate at apex, undulate in the middle part, abruptly acuminate hairy in the middle and upper part, ciliate at margin.. Flowers sessile, bracteoles spathulate, 6–6.5 × 2.5 mm, hairy in middle and upper part, ciliate at margin; calyx tubular, 6.5–7 mm long, finely hairy, with 5 lanceolate teeth of 2 mm length; corolla blue, with cylindrical tube 6–7 × 1.5–2 mm, lobes of upper lip 2, oblong, lobes of lower lip 3, oblong, 3.5 × 2–2.2 mm; stamens, filaments of the longer pair 1 mm long, filaments of the shorter pair 0.5 mm long. with 1–1.1 mm long anther, acute Capsule 3–3.5 mm long, oblong. Seeds not observed.
DISTRIBUTION—Endemic to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, recorded in the phytogeographical units Bas-Congo, Kasai and Forestier Central.
HABITAT—Savannas, often on sandy soil, between 400 and 600 m altitude.
