( Figs 29 View FIGURES 27–37 , 64 View FIGURES 53–67 , 122 View FIGURES 110–128 )

Clivina westwoodi Putzeys, 1867: 109 View in CoL ; Andrewes, 1926: 373; 1928: 151; 1929a: 365; 1930: 119; Csiki, 1927: 512; Nakane, 1952: 2; 1953: 48; 1978: 2; Darlington 1962: 365; 1971: 255; Saha & Biswas 1985: 120; Balkenohl, 2001: 17; 2017: 256; 2021b: 35; Lorenz, 2005: 145; 2024: 5 ZB8S.

Type material. Lectotype by present designation: ♀, with labels and data: yellow, handwritten in black ink “Castanea P. N. Guin. (Stev.) ” / grey, handwritten in black ink and black printed “ Clivina castanea Putz. dét. J. Putzeys ” / white, dark blue framed and printed “Soc.Ent.Belg. Coll. PUTZEYS” / white, handwritten in black ink and printed “ Clivina Westwoodi Putz. (N. Guinea) = C. Wallacei Putz. H.E.Andrewes det 1928” ( RBINS).

Remarks. The lectotype is glued at the pedunculus.

Putzeys (1863) described a species under the name of Clivina castanea based on two specimens from New Guinea and Sri Lanka. Later, when he found the name castanea was already occupied by Westwood (1837), he renamed it in Clivina westwoodi ( Putzeys 1867, p. 109) . Andrewes (1926, 1929a) mentioned, the specimens are deposited in RBINS. They belong to different species, and the specimen from New Guinea belongs to C. wallacei ( Putzeys 1867, described by Putzeys p. 127 / see also label quotation of the LT above as well as remark in Andrewes 1926, p. 373). The specimen from New Guinea is available in RBINS. It is not identical with C. wallacei Putzeys , as asserted by Andrewes (1926, p. 373). It remains to be a miracle where the specimen from Sri Lanka is deposited. It is not in RBINS or NHMUK as I could check during personal visits, and could not be located in any of the other institutions mentioned.

At this point in time, the specimen from New Guinea seems to be the only type specimen available. Therefore, it has been selected as lectotype and the extended diagnosis is based on this lectotype. In case the material from Sri Lanka will show up by any chance, that specimen has to be reassessed. This designation was done in order to maintain stability of the nomenclature .

There are several specimens listed under the redescription of Andrewes(1929a) as representatives of C. westwoodi Putzeys. These specimens are available in NHMUK. They were investigated and listed here for completeness but not used for the compendious description. They are similar to C. westwoodi but consist of more than one different form. This is true for external characters, the ratios of measurements, and for characters of the genitalia. In the absence of Putzeys’ material from Sri Lanka, I refrain from further taxonomic action. It is the following material: 1 spec., Dehra Dun, U.P., S. Bahadur III. 1909 / For. Res. Inst. Dehra Dun / 204 / H.E.Andrewes Coll. B.M.1945-97. This specimen is a member of the different Clivina lobata -species group. It was also quoted as C. westwoodi by Saha & Biswas (1985). 1 ♂, Belgaum. Kh. / H.E.Andrewes Coll. B.M.1945-97. / Clivina Westwoodi Putz. Compared with type H.E.A.; backside: ‘Figure another prothorax strongly developed’; 1 ♂, Belgaum, Bombay H.E.Andrewes / H.E.Andrewes Coll. B.M.1945-97. / Clivina Westwoodi Putz. Compared with type H.E.A.; backside: ‘Only stalk of figure on the prothorax visible’; 1 ♀, Gerrappa L 29 6 07 / T.R. Bell collection B.M. 1934-394 / Clivina Westwoodi Putz. H.E.Andrewes det. / CLIVINA westwoodi Putzeys, 1866 P.Bulirsch det. 2012; The quoted specimen from Sri Lanka, Colombo (G. M. Henry) ( Andrewes 1929a) is not available. 1 ♀, JAPAN Kobe Harada 25.VI.’19 / J.E.A.Lewis. 1920—105 / 806 / Clivina Westwoodi Putz. H.E.Andrewes det. The specimen from Japan fits with the description of Nakane (1978) of C. westwoodi Putzeys.

Compendious description. A medium sized fuscous species with the following measurements: Lectotype: Body length 5.72 mm, width 1.61 mm, ratio L/W of pronotum 1.91, ratio L/W of elytra 1.93.

Head with labrum with three setiferous punctures at each side, with a setigerous puncture at middle situated slightly backwards, resulting in seven-setose, straight anteriorly. Median part of clypeus slightly excised, separated from clypeal-wing by distinct notch, lateral teeth of clypeus moderately projecting, rounded, clypeal-wing not as far projecting as clypeal-teeth, rounded, separated from supraantennal plates by distinct notch. Eye prominent, gena small. Clypeo-frontal furrow somewhat rugose, distinct; clypeus transverse; neck constriction open at middle, with indistinct punctures posteriorly. Frons with flat pore at middle, smooth. Antennae subelongate, not reaching base of pronotum.

Pronotum ( Fig. 64 View FIGURES 53–67 ) square to sub-cordate, wider than long, slightly convex in frontal and moderately convex in lateral view, with lateral margin slightly convex, widest at middle, angles distinct, posterior angle blunt, with small rounded tooth, lateral margin nearly smooth, disk with some scattered punctures in basal half, with isodiametric reticulation at base; lateral margin from posterior angle to flange of base slanted with angle of around 35°, basal channel of flange of regular size, basal carina not sharp. Proepisternum with distinct isodiametric reticulation, with few extraordinary fine transverse wrinkles.

Elytron ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 27–37 ) elongate, flattened in basal half in lateral view, distinctly convex in frontal view, base straight, lateral margin nearly straight in basal half but slightly diverging, subcrenulated posterior humerus, striae one to four ending free at base, interval three with four setigerous punctures; striae impunctate on disk; intervals moderately convex, interval seven and eight, as well as base and apical third of elytron isodiametrically reticulated, interval eight carinate in apical fifth, seven with shortened step-like carina at apex, striole not deep but well visible, setigerous tubercle at base distinct, with distinct tubercle at base of third interval.

Lower surface with abdomen with isodiametric reticulation, more confluent at middle, two apical setigerous punctures widely separated.

Hind wing fully developed.

Legs with intermediate tibia with nine tubercles with setae above the spur at the lateral side.

Male genitalia unknown.

Female gonocoxites and epipleurite ( Fig. 122 View FIGURES 110–128 ). Basal gonocoxite with apex acuminated conically with long seta at apex and second long seta subapically, apical gonocoxite elongated, slightly curved, cylindrical in cross section, with two setae basally, with one long seta at middle, with two long setae apically. Epipleurite sub-trapezoid, laterally with two setae close together.

Distribution. Known from New Guinea.
