Type material. Lectotype by present designation: ♀, with labels and data: white, black printed “Kina Balu Borneo” / white, black printed “Bought from Staudinger & Bang-Haas, 1930” / red, black printed “Type” / white, black printed and handwritten in black ink “ Clivina monticola Andr. Type H.E.Andrewes det.” / white, black printed “ H.E.Andrewes Coll. B.M. 1945-97.” ( NHMUK) . Paralectotype by present designation: 1 ♂, with labels and data: white, black printed “Kina Balu Borneo” / white, black printed and handwritten in black ink “ Kauf 8. 1936 von Staudinger ” / red, handwritten in black ink “ Paratypus monticola Andr. ” / white, black printed and handwritten in black ink “ Clivina monticola Andr. Cotype H.E.Andrewes det.” / white, handwritten in black ink “monticola Andr. ” / white, black printed “ F. van Emden Bequest. B.M. 1960-129.” ( NHMUK) .
Remark. The available type material consists of two conspecific specimens, labelled as ‘Type’, and ‘Cotype’, and´Paratype´. Andrewes (1931) mentioned six specimens. For reasons of unambiguousness, a lectotype and paralectotype is designated.
The species is described by Andrewes (1931).

Compendious description. A large sized piceous species with the following measurements: Body length 7.24– 8.96 mm (ẍ = 8.02 mm *), width 2.03–2.51 mm (ẍ = 2.26 mm *), ratio L/W of pronotum 0.89–0.93 (ẍ = 0.91*), ratio L/W of elytra 1.89–1.99 (ẍ = 1.93*); (*n = 10).
Head with labrum 7-setose, slightly trilobed anteriorly. Head somewhat rugose, frons smooth. Median part of clypeus separated from clypeal-wing by distinct notch, clypeal-wings slightly projecting. Eye distinctly convex, projecting laterally, gena small. Clypeo-frontal furrow distinct, rugose. Neck constriction developed as distinct step. Frons with circular impression at middle, with another wider depression anteriorly, facial carina distinct.
Pronotum ( Fig. 38 View FIGURES 38–52 ) square, wider than long, distinctly convex in frontal view, slightly convex in lateral view, with lateral margin nearly parallel, widest at middle, anterior angles rounded off, posterior angles sharp, conspicuously projecting laterally, lateral margin slightly crenate, surface bilaterally with line-like impression, with two groups of punctures anterior to impressions, glossy on disc, with finely scattered punctures, with isodiametric reticulation at base; basal part of lateral margin from posterior angle to flange of base slanted with angle of around 20°, basal channel and carina of flange narrow. Proepisternum with distinct isodiametric reticulation, laterally with fine transverse wrinkles, medially with fine punctures.
Elytron ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 3–14 ) subcylindrical, lateral margin crenate in anterior quarter, striae one to four ending free at base, interval three with four setigerous punctures, stria one with small apical setigerous puncture. Intervals moderately convex, intervals seven and eight as well as base and apex isodiametrically reticulated, interval eight carinate in apical quarter, seventh with very short carina at apex, third at base with small tubercle.
Lower surface with abdomen with isodiametric reticulation, two apical setigerous punctures widely separated. Hind wing fully developed. Intermediate tibia with nine tubercles with setae above the spur at the lateral side.
Male genitalia ( Fig. 73 View FIGURES 73–84 ). Median lobe distinctly and regularly arcuate at middle, laterally nearly straight, with moderately acuminated and rounded apex. Parameres distinctly arcuate, hyaline in apical third, each with short small pilus at apex.
Female gonocoxites and epipleurite ( Figs 105, 106 View FIGURES 105–109 ). Gonocoxites scapiform, elongated, fragile, less sclerotized, not fused, completely movable; basal gonocoxite 1 widened, with tree long and one minute setae, apical gonocoxite 2 slender, conspicuously elongated, cylindrical in apical half, with two long setae at apex, with three small and two medium sized setae at lateral margin. Epipleurite formed by hyaline velum, furnished with a single seta and a pair of setae. Variation. The lateral margin of the pronotum varies from slightly convex to straight. There is also one specimen with indistinctly concave part at the lateral margin. The sharp tooth at the posterior angle projects laterally in most specimens not as far as the maximum width of the margin. In two cases, it is indistinctly wider than the widest part of the lateral margin. At the intermediate tibia, the number of tubercles above the spur vary from seven to nine, whereas the setae are always present.
Distribution. Known from Sabah and Brunei on the island of Borneo .
