Phytagromyza acanthacearum Spencer, 1959: 313 View in CoL

Material examined. 1♂, Jazan, Fifa ( Al-Tatweer Centre), 26.i–16.ii.2014, Malaise trap, H.A.Dawah ( ENRC).

Distribution: First record from Saudi Arabia. This species was described from Cameroun and was further recorded from Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan and Tanzania ( Cogan 1980; Deeming 2006).

Host remarks. This species was reared from Acanthaceae (the genus and species are not known) ( Spencer 1959).

Remarks. Pseudonapomyza species have a characteristic third antennal segment. Spencer (1973: 262) writes “This genus is divided into two distinct species groups, one feeding on Gramineae , the other on Acanthaceae . A distinctive difference between the groups is the angulate third antennal segment of the Gramineae feeders”. Pseudonapomyza species have characteristic wing venation. For P. acanthacearum the figure of the wing venation appears as fig. 74 on p.321 of Spencer (1959) which shows the discal cell is foreshortened to such a point that it appears to be square and has its closing crossvein level with or slightly basad to the anterior crossvein. Spencer (1965: 266) has drawn the genitalia of P. acanthacearum .
