Type species. Zophopetes ganda Evans, 1937 View in CoL .
Definition. Described by Evans (1937) in the genus Zophopetes Mabille, 1904 View in CoL (type species Pamphila dysmephila Trimen, 1868 View in CoL ) and kept in it since, Z. ganda View in CoL (type locality in Ivory Coast) is not monophyletic with Zophopetes View in CoL and instead is in the same clade with Leona Evans, 1937 View in CoL (type species Hesperia leonora Plötz, 1879 View in CoL ) and its subgenus Mopala Evans, 1937 View in CoL (type species Ismene? orma Plötz, 1879 ): sister to the subgenus Leona View in CoL in the nuclear genome tree ( Fig. 45) and sister to both Leona View in CoL and Mopala View in CoL , but less confidently, in the mitochondrial genome tree ( Fig. 46). In either case, it is closely related to them both and yet genetically differentiated from them at approximately the same level as they are from each other. Therefore, similarly to Mopala View in CoL , the lineage with Z. ganda View in CoL represents a subgenus of Leona View in CoL . This new subgenus keys to 53.A. in Evans (1937) and is distinguished from its relatives by males with a brand (from the base of vein CuA 1 to near vein 1A+2A) and an apical spot on dorsal forewing (both absent in Zophopetes View in CoL ), ventral hindwing uniformly pale-brown with small dark-brown-framed spots (not like Leona View in CoL and Mopala View in CoL ); upturned harpe, uncus in dorsal view narrower than in Zophopetes View in CoL , especially in the middle, with smaller knob-shaped arms. A combination of the following nuclear genomic base pairs is diagnostic: aly1038.19.1:T165C, aly 1405.10.1:T456C, aly925.11.3:A69G, aly587.17.1:T205A, aly 2127.3.3:A24G, aly1838.61.1:T618T (not C), aly1838.61.1:T675T (not A), aly4305.26.4:C31C (not G), aly27.16.1:C354C (not A), aly614.16.1:A1098A (not G).
Etymology. The name is a feminine noun in the nominative singular, a tautonym of the type species name.
Species included. Only the type species.
