Material examined. Faro: several adults and immatures, Aljezur, 37°19'00.9"N 8°48'11.5"W, 09.x.2021, Schinus areira (leg. B. Duarte) ( BDC, dry mounted and 70% ethanol); several adults and immatures, Faro, 37°01'25.2"N 7°55'11.3"W, 25.iii.2021, S. areira (leg. B. Duarte) ( BDC, dry mounted and 70% ethanol); several adults and immatures, Olhão, 37°02'06.0"N 7°49'56.4"W, 25.iii.2021, S. areira (leg. B. Duarte) ( BDC, dry mounted and 70% ethanol); several adults and immatures, Tavira, 37°10'31.8"N 7°32'07.8"W, 24.iii.2021, S. areira (leg. B. Duarte) ( BDC, dry mounted and 70% ethanol); 3♂, 2♀, Várzea de Aljezur, 37°18'19.8"N 8°47'52.1"W, 9–12.ix.2024, S. areira (leg. D. Burckhardt & D.L. Queiroz) ( NHMB, dry mounted and 70% ethanol).
Distribution Portugal. Madeira: Madeira Island (iNaturalist, Appendix 1). Mainland: Coimbra (iNaturalist, Appendix 1); Faro (this study); Lisbon ( Zina et al. 2012; Bella 2013; iNaturalist, Appendix 1); Porto (iNaturalist, Appendix 1).
Host plants Portugal. Anacardiaceae : Schinus areira L. (this study). The report from S. molle L. ( Zina et al. 2012) probably also concerns S. areira ; until recently, these two species have been regarded as synonyms ( Zapater et al. 2018). All previously published host records of C. schini that we could check concerned S. areira , not S. molle (D. Burckhardt, unpubl. data). The latter is probably not used as a host by C. schini .
Parasitoid. Immatures of C. schini parasitised by Tamarixia sp. ( Hymenoptera : Eulophidae ) were found in the district of Faro.
Comments. In a faunistic survey in several localities of the districts of Faro (Tavira, Patacão) and Santarém (Azambuja) in 2011, C. schini was not found ( Zina et al. 2012). Here we report the species for the first time from south Portugal, where it is now widely distributed in the district of Faro. Also, entries in iNaturalist suggest that it is widely distributed throughout mainland Portugal, reflecting the popular use of the host as an ornamental tree in cities .
